Werner Heukamp was born on May 20, 1929 as the son of the master baker Heinrich Heukamp and his wife Maria, née Stehmann, in Hörstel. After graduating from high school Dionysianum in Rheine in 1950 , he studied theology and philosophy at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster and Mainz . Since then he has been a member of the Schoenstatt Apostolic Movement . On 16 March 1957 he received by Bishop Michael Keller , the ordination . Werner Heukamp then worked from 1957 to 1969 as a chaplain in Borken-Gemen , Hopsten and at St. Martinus in Greven . In 1969 he became pastor of the Greven St. Mary's Assumption Congregation, which he headed until he was 65 in 1994. From 1975 Pastor Heukamp also headed the Greven Parish Association. As Vicarius cooperator , he moved to Recke in 1994 in the parish of St. Dionysius. In 2004, Bishop Reinhard Lettmann relieved him of this office and awarded him the title of parochus emeritus. Nevertheless, Pastor Heukamp was still active in pastoral care .

As an author, Heukamp campaigned for the preservation and maintenance of the Low German language and encouraged Low German reading competitions in local schools. His literary model was above all his brother Augustin Wibbelt , whom he often quoted. For Thanksgiving , he regularly celebrated Low German masses in Recke and Steinbeck. He had great, national success with his Plattdütsket Gebiädbook , first published in 1996 , which saw several editions. For this compilation, Heukamp translated numerous psalms and other passages of the Old Testament and the New Testament , but also prayers such as Our Father , the Ave Maria or the Apostles' Creed into Low German and provided them with brief meditative reflections. But he also translated texts as varied as the Canticle of the Sun by St. Francis of Assisi or the prayers of Eduard Mörike into Low German for this book. Heukamp was ahead of its time: The first “official” Low German prayer book was published by the diocese of Münster in 2004 under the title “Morgen roop ick Di wedder an” . Under the title Niehet hauch , he had another prayer book followed in 2008 with texts in both Low and High German.

Heukamp wrote his texts in the Münsterländer Platt , being aware of the fact that the pronunciation and meaning of individual words can be very different locally. Therefore, in the preface to his Plattdütsket Gebiädbook, he gave the following reference:

“Every Duorp and every city would have its own flat-faced talk. Daorüm is et good, the Gebiäd toeerst quietly vör sik to leave and then lut in its own Sprauke to saw. "

Since his time in Greven, Heukamp has also been active as a local researcher for the old district of Tecklenburg and the former county of Lingen . The move to Recke moved him to study the history of this community intensively. In this context, Heukamp suggested the erection of a series of memorial plaques and wayside shrines , which were realized in cooperation with the Recke local history association and local fasting evenings . He worked closely with Josef Surholt († 2008) in the “Sculpture” initiative group. The last joint project of the two Heimatfreunde was the sculpture group Torfstecher und Sohn at work , set up in 2009 , which reminds of the former economic importance of the Recker Moor .

Heukamp published his knowledge of local history in his Unnerwäggens düör Riecke column, which appears every two weeks in the Ibbenbürener Volkszeitung . The contributions, often supplemented by anecdotes, were mostly written entirely or at least in parts in Low German. He prepared selections from these in 2001, 2006 and 2010 in book form. He made various contributions to Unser Kreis , the yearbook for the Steinfurt district.

In addition, Heukamp wrote a number of mystery plays , which were performed on the occasion of various church festivals, but have not yet appeared in print. For one of these performances, The Grave is Empty , a game that he had written as President of the Catholic Workers' Movement (KAB) Recke for their theater group, the KAB-Theaterspielkreis received the first Recker culture award from the local cultural association in 2003 . Heukamp was recognized as the author of the play and for his contributions to the Ibbenbürener Volkszeitung . In 2011, Heukamp published a smaller work on the local saint of Riesenbeck, Sünte Rendel (Reinhildis), and the legends surrounding them, with which the native Hörsteler had been familiar from early childhood. The little book also contains a short Low German stage play in two acts on the life and role model of the saints.

Another area of interest of the nature lover, who wanted to become a gardener as a child , was flora. He was particularly fond of the flowers and wild herbs .

On the occasion of his golden jubilee as a priest, which he celebrated on March 18, 2007 in Recke, the Heimatverein Recke eV made him an honorary member.

On March 18, 2011, Werner Heukamp received the Steinfurt District Customs Prize for his special services in maintaining local traditions and customs . This prize is awarded annually to personalities who are committed to research, conservation and the active cultivation of local traditions and customs in the Steinfurt district with their work.

In 2019 Werner Heukamp received the cultural award of the Recke cultural association for his life's work in promoting the Low German language.

In December 2019, the Recke community council decided unanimously to make Werner Heukamp an honorary citizen of the Recke community at the suggestion of the Recke Heimatverein and the Recke cultural association.

He died on July 29, 2020 at the age of 91.

Quote

“When you grow up bilingual, that's always good. That makes the mind fly. And if you speak Platt, you can already speak half English. "
