history

On May 26, 1992, the Research Institute for Music Theater of the University of Bayreuth (FIMT), the Institute for Theater, Film and Media Studies at the University of Vienna, the Academy of Sciences in Prague and the Vanemuine Tartu Theater in the Estates Theater in Prague founded the European Music Theater Academy. Initially, the core tasks of the EMA were to support and network Eastern European partner organizations in the new Europe. In the meantime, the EMA has established itself as a pan-European organization. Since 1992, the Academy has already organized 19 international symposia in Russia, Portugal, France and Switzerland, among others, the subjects of which put music theater in a multi-perspective context, such as organization and management, theater historiography, singing research, contemporary performance practice or the question of “faithfulness to the work ".

The results of these conferences are published in the papers of the European Music Theater Academy (edited by Isolde Schmid-Reiter).

The General Secretariat has been located in the Vienna Hofburg at the Institute for Theater, Film and Media Studies since 1996 .
