Tomasz Konieczny
Tomasz Konieczny (born January 10, 1972 in Łódź ) is a Polish opera singer ( bass / bass-baritone ) and actor .
Life
He first studied acting at the Łódź Film Academy and then began studying singing at the Fryderyk Chopin Academy in Warsaw, which he then continued at the Carl Maria von Weber Academy of Music in Dresden in the class of Prof. Christian Elßner. As an actor he could be seen in the film Ring with the Eagle in the Crown by Andrzej Wajda . Further appearances as an actor followed, including as Tristan in a television production by Tristan and Isolde directed by Krystyna Janda .
As a singer, Konieczny received a scholarship from the Minister of Culture of the Republic of Poland in 1997, the Alfred Toepfer Foundation from 1998-2000 and from the Foundation for Art and Culture of the Sparkasse Dresden in 1999. At the 33rd International Dvořák Singing Competition in Karlovy Vary in 1998, he was awarded 2nd prize. His debut as a singer took place in 1997 at the Poznan Opera with the role of Figaro in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro . Two years later he made his debut in Germany as Kezal in Smetana's The Bartered Bride as a guest singer at the Leipzig Opera , where he sang Monterone in Rigoletto by Verdi , the editor in Die Nase and again Kezal in the 1999/2000 season .
In the 2000/01 season he switched to the Lübeck Theater as bass . His roles have included Procida in the Sicilian Vespers , Pandolfe in Cendrillon by Massenet , Orest in Elektra and Ramphis in Aida . During this time he was invited to the St. Gallen Theater as Procida, to the Halle Opera as Sarastro, to the Chemnitz Theater as Pandolfe and to the National Theater Mannheim as Colline.
From the 2002/03 season Konieczny was a permanent member of the Mannheim National Theater, where he was awarded the Arnold Petersen Prize in 2004 as an award for particularly talented young artists . His roles in Mannheim were Orest in Elektra , Pimen in Boris Godunow , König Marke in Tristan and Isolde , Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte , Amfortas in Parsifal , Wotan in Das Rheingold and Die Walküre , Pizarro in Fidelio , Grand Inquisitor in Don Carlos , Melitone in La forza del destino and Johanaan in Salome . Most of it was under the direction of Ádám Fischer .
In February 2005, his debut took place on the Stuttgart State Theater as Sarastro and in June 2005 when King Vladislav in Smetana's Dalibor at the State Theater Saarbrücken , in March 2006 he made his debut at the Prague State Opera as Procida in Verdi's I Vespri Siciliani , in June 2006 as Amfortas in Parsifal at the Budapest Wagner Days under the direction of Ádám Fischer, in August 2006 he made his debut in Bach's St. Matthew Passion with arias in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro under the direction of Kent Nagano , in March 2007 he made his debut as King Heinrich in Lohengrin in Tokyo with the New Japan Philharmonic conducted by Christian Arming .
From the 2005/06 season he was engaged by the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, initially as Wotan in Rheingold under the direction of Hans Wallat, Osmin in Die Entführung aus dem Serail , Melitone in La forza del destino under the direction of John Fiore and from the 2006 season / 2007 as a permanent member of the ensemble. His roles were Bottom in Midsummer Night's Dream and Kurwenal in Tristan and Isolde , Goloaud in Pelléas et Mélisande , Selim in Il turco in Italia and Amfortas in Parsifal . In June 2007 Konieczny sang Wotan in Walküre again at the Budapest Wagner Days under the direction of Ádám Fischer . In January 2008 he made his debut at the Semperoper Dresden as Alberich under the direction of Peter Schneider .
On April 27, 2008 he made his debut as Alberich in the new production of Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst at the Vienna State Opera . Also under the direction of Welser-Möst, he gave Sheriff Jack Rance in La fanciulla del West at the Vienna State Opera in October 2013 , where he had previously attracted the public's attention as Mandryka in Richard Strauss ' Arabella .
In 2012 he made his debut at the Salzburg Festival - as Stolzius in Zimmermann's Soldiers under Ingo Metzmacher , in the epochal direction of Alvis Hermanis . In 2014 he returned to Salzburg as Commendatore in Don Giovanni .
In 2018 Konieczny made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival as Friedrich von Telramund in Lohengrin under Christian Thielemann .
In 2019 she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera New York as Alberich (conducted by Philippe Jordan).
