International Antonín Dvořák Competition

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Antonín Dvořák Competition ( Czech "Mezinárodní pěvecké soutěže Antonína Dvořáka" ) is a singing competition for graduates of music academies and conservatories that has been held in Karlovy Vary since 1966 . While participation in the competition was limited to young singers from the Eastern Bloc until 1989 , the Dvořák competition has developed into an internationally open event since the " Velvet Revolution " in the 1990s. The two main categories of “lieder performance” and “opera singing” are scored, the latter divided into men and women. In addition, prizes in the “Junior” category and changing special prizes are awarded.

History and process

The idea of a competition for young concert and opera singers was developed in the 1960s by singing teachers Marie Budíková-Jeremiášová, Vlasta Linhartová and Karel Leiss together with the Karlovy Vary city administration. Originally, the competition was intended for the current graduates of music schools in Czechoslovakia. Today this restriction no longer exists, instead there are age limits depending on the pitch of the voice. Tenors and basses in the main song and opera categories can be a maximum of 32 years old, for soprances and altos the age limit is 30 years. In the junior rating, men may be a maximum of 24 years old, women 23 years old.

The competition takes place every November, and in the last few years around 100 candidates have been invited to Karlovy Vary. The competition takes place in two rounds, the finalists of the first round with piano accompaniment sing an operatic aria with orchestral accompaniment in the second round. The award winners include Edita Gruberová and Olaf Bär . The winners will perform in an opera concert at the Prague State Opera . In each of the five categories (“opera singing” men / women, “lieder lecture” and “junior” men / women) a maximum of one first place is awarded, the second and third places are less often occupied twice. In some years, an overall winner is determined from the category winners.
