Krystyna Jolanta Janda (born December 18, 1952 in Starachowice ) is a Polish actress , singer and writer .

Life

Krystyna Janda is considered to be the first lady in Polish theater and film. After completing her studies at the Warsaw State Drama School PWST in 1975, she began working with the Warsaw Theater Teatr Ateneum for many years . She made her theater debut in the role of Dorian Gray in The Portrait of Dorian Gray . She made her debut in Andrzej Wajda's film The Man of Marble as early as 1977 and immediately enjoyed international success with this leading role. In 1978 she received the Cybulski Prize for Best Young Actress. The films with Wajda in particular gave her the chance to become known beyond the borders of Poland and to be committed to European productions abroad. An outstanding example is the film Mephisto by István Szabó , where she shines alongside Klaus Maria Brandauer .

The high point of her career was the Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1990 . She received it for the politically highly explosive film Interrogation of a Woman , shot in 1982 , in which she plays a prisoner for political reasons during the Stalinist phase at the beginning of communist rule . The film was initially banned and only premiered in 1989.

Krystyna Janda was also a regular guest at the Berlinale , for example with the films The Conductor and A Short Film about the Killing of Krzysztof Kieślowski . In San Sebastián she won the Silver Shell for Zwolnieni z życia from Waldemar Krzystek. She mostly plays strong women with a rich inner life. She has played around 60 roles in the theater. She has success in all theater genres. Her greatest success was her role in Medea by Euripides . She has played the leading role in Shirley Valentine and Educating Rita over 400 times. She has played over 50 roles in television theater and over 45 in films. She was the favorite actress of Andrzej Wajda . Her “Sto twarzy Krystyny ​​Jandy” was the largest theater tour in the history of Polish theater. She has been directing in theater and television since the 1990s. She directed the film Pestka , based on the cult novel about love by Anna Kowalska. Critics consider it one of the best debut films. In 2005 she established one of the first Polish private theaters, “Teatr Polonia”.

With the actor Andrzej Seweryn she has the daughter Maria Seweryn , who now also works as an actress. Krystyna Janda was married to cameraman Edward Kłosiński and is the mother of two sons. In 2006 she received the Charles Medal for European Media . She is the author of five books and writes feature sections for magazines.

In December 2012 Moonblinx Publishing published the book "Edward Hartwig - Poetic Rebel" ( ISBN 9783941614062 ) edited by Sebastian Gaiser & Karoline von Roques. The title of the book shows Krystyna Janda photographed by Edward Hartwig. An interview with Krystyna Janda accompanies the band.
