action

After the Second World War, the apolitical Tonia worked as a troop supervisor . She lived happily with her husband Kostek until 1951. But after a wild night she wakes up in prison. In order to obtain incriminating statements against colleagues, she is tortured mentally and physically by the security police in long interrogations that are difficult to bear even for the audience . But with the inhuman torments Tonias strength grows. Only when her husband wants to get a divorce does she attempt suicide. In the prison hospital she gets closer to Lieutenant Morawski, whose child is forcibly taken away from her nine months later. As a broken person, Tonia only regains freedom after Stalin's death .

Reviews

“A harsh charge against Stalinism and its terrorist methods, portrayed in harrowing images of torture. The film, which aims to show how human dignity can survive even under the most extreme conditions, was banned in Poland and only shown in Cannes in 1990. Although it is occasionally exaggerated to the point of unbearable, it never loses itself in excesses for a purpose in itself. Rather, it sets emotional surges, brief feelings of happiness and buried traces of humanity in moments of brokenness as signs of hope. "

Awards

When it was shown again during the Gdansk Film Festival in 1989, "Interrogation of a Woman" was invited to a competition in Cannes. The leading actress Krystyna Janda , also known to us for several international roles, received the award for the best acting.
