Aleksander Zelwerowicz Theater Academy in Warsaw
The Aleksander Zelwerowicz Theater Academy Warsaw is a state drama school in Warsaw . It was named Akademia Teatralna Aleksander Zelwerowicz in 1996 and is the successor to the State Theater Institute (PIST) founded in 1932 by Aleksander Zelwerowicz and Leon Schiller . After the Second World War, the school was renamed the State Theater Academy (PWST). Alongside PWST in Krakow, it is the most important training facility for Polish theater actors and directors.
history
After the establishment of the institute in 1932, Aleksander Zalwerowicz and Leon Schiller shared the work as directors of the school. Zalwerowicz took over the faculty for actor training, while Schiller trained young directors. This dichotomy still exists today. During the Second World War and the German occupation, the institute taught underground. The most famous actor trained in the underground school is Andrzej Łapicki . Łapicki is still closely associated with the school and was its principal for many years.
After the war, the school was based in Łódź from 1946 to 1949 and then moved back to Warsaw. Leon Schiller initially ran the school even after the war, but was removed from the management of the school due to the prevailing Stalinism in Poland. The actor Jan Kreczmar took over the management of the school. Kreczmar remained the principal of the school until 1967 and led it through the politically most changeable years.
With Tadeusz Łomnicki , the most famous Polish actor took over the management of the school. He was replaced in 1981 by Andrzej Łapicki. In the years up to 2002, Łapicki alternated with the actor Jan Englert as rector of the university. The theater scholar Lech Śliwonik has been running the school since 2002 .
