Andrzej Łapicki (born November 11, 1924 in Riga ; † July 21, 2012 in Warsaw ) was a Polish actor , theater director and educator, and politician .

Life

Andrzej Łapicki was the son of Borys Łapicki, a professor of Roman law . In 1942 he graduated from the famous Warsaw high school Stefan Batory , which at that time continued to teach underground during the German occupation.

As a goalkeeper, he took part in conspiratorial football tournaments and risked arrest by the Gestapo because the German occupiers had banned the Poles from all organized sports. After graduating from high school, he also studied underground acting and played as an actor in underground theater performances. As an actor he was a member of the Polish Home Army and took part in the Warsaw Uprising in 1944.

After the war, he received his acting diploma in Łódź in 1945 and was then part of the ensemble of the Łódź Army Theater until 1949. In 1949 he went to Warsaw, where he worked as an actor and director at the following theaters: Teatr Współczesny (1949–1964, 1966–1972), Teatr Dramatyczny (1964–1966, 1982/1983), Teatr Narodowy (1972–1981) and Teatr Polski (1983). He made his directorial debut in 1957. From 1995 to 1999 he was director of the Teatr Polski in Warsaw.

In addition to his active acting activities, Łapicki was a committed theater teacher. Since 1953 he has been a lecturer at the State Drama School PWST in Warsaw. From 1971 to 1981 he was dean of the drama faculty and was appointed associate professor in 1979. From 1981 to 1987 and from 1993 to 1996 he was principal of the school. He had been a member of Solidarność since the early 1980s and was a member of the Polish Sejm from 1989 to 1991 . From 1989 to 1996 he was also President of the Association of Polish Performers (ZASP).

In the course of his long career, Andrzej Łapicki played more than 200 film and theater roles and directed more than 100 plays.
