Leonard Buczkowski

Leonard Buczkowski (born July 5, 1900 in Warsaw , Poland ; † February 19, 1967 there ) was a Polish film director and screenwriter .

Life

Leonard Buczkowski received from 1920 to 1922 film acting training in the film studio of Stanisław Wysocki and Wiktor Biegański . After completing his training, he became an assistant director to Wiktor Biegański and also appeared as an actor. In 1928 he first directed. In 1930 he made the most expensive Polish feature film to date. Gwiaździsta eskadra is about an American pilot who fought in the Polish Army in the Polish-Soviet War from 1918 to 1920. The story was inspired by the true story of the American pilot, film director and actor Merian C. Cooper , who actually fought alongside the Polish soldiers in that war. However, copies of the film have been lost or destroyed since 1945.

After the Second World War, Buczkowski was the director of the first Polish feature film after the war. The film Zakazane piosenki tells the story of Warsaw during the German occupation from 1939 to 1945. The film was made in 1946 and had its world premiere on January 8, 1947. Jerzy Duszyński and Danuta Szaflarska played the leading roles. With these two main actors, Buczkowski directed Skarb, the first Polish film comedy after the war in 1949 . With the comedy Przygoda na Mariensztacie from 1954, Buczkowski also shot the very first Polish color film . His film Sprawa pilota Maresza was awarded the Złota Kaczka film prize in 1957 by the film magazine Film as the best Polish film of the year.

Leonard Buczkowski was married to the Polish actress Barbara Orwid (1909-1998).
