Pan Tadeusz is a Polish feature film based on the epic verse of the same name by the Polish writer Adam Mickiewicz .
action
Polish emigrants remember the last uprising against the Tsar in Poland-Lithuania in Paris . Adam Mickiewicz is one of them and tells the story of Pan Tadeusz . The young Tadeusz Soplica returned to his family's country estate in Lithuania in 1811 after completing his studies. His guardian and brother of his father, the judge Soplica, awaits him there . The judge runs the property. His family's house looks completely empty. Tadeusz visits his former nursery and discovers the girl Zosia .
In the evening there is a big party in the castle of the count family. Tadeusz falls in love with the beautiful Telimena , who is much older than Tadeusz and is also courted by the count. It turns out that the girl Zosia is under the care of the count's family and lives in his former room. Young Tadeusz is confused by his feelings for Telimena and for Zosia. They blind him to what is going on around him. He does not recognize his father Jacek Soplica in the priest Robak . Jacek Soplica brought shame on the Soplica family. He once fled to a monastery for murdering the ruling count. Since then, the Soplica family has been living in a quarrel with the count family and is exposed to the lust for revenge of the faithful servant Gerwazy . Jacek Soplica now returns in the robe of the priest Robak. The patriotic priest Robak recognizes the possibility that Poland can regain its independence. There is an uprising against the Tsar. Robak is fatally wounded and reveals himself on his deathbed. The families reconciliation and Tadeusz becomes engaged to Zosia.
Soundtrack and theme song for the film
The soundtrack for the film was composed by Wojciech Kilar , internationally known for his film music for Bram Stoker's Dracula , Death and the Maiden , Portrait of a Lady , The Pianist , The Truman Show and The Nine Portals . Pomaton EMI released the soundtrack for the film under the film title Pan Tadeusz in 1999 on CD. The Polish Radio National Symphony Orchestra first recorded track 13 in July 1998 in the Warsaw Studio S4 of the Polish Radio (sound engineer: Dariusz Szweryn). In December 1998, tracks 1–12 and 14–15 followed in the radio orchestra's own concert hall (sound engineer: Beata Jankowska-Burzyńska, assistant: Jacek Kuśmierczyk). Tracks 17 and 18 were the last two tracks produced. They were recorded in July 1999 in Studio M1 of the Polish Radio Warsaw (sound engineer: Tadeusz Mieczkowski). The soundtrack CD also contains the title song for the film Soplicowo with Grzegorz Turnau and Stanisław Sojka .
Kilars Polonez from the film (title 15) is now a very popular dance at the Polish prom, at Polish weddings and, more recently, on Poland's streets and squares, where it is danced with city representatives.
Reviews
“The dialogues, thirteen silver with paired rhyme, have both excellent realism and ironic and self-deprecating pointings and romantic poetry. The linguistic beauty and power are of course not fully accessible to the non-Polish viewer, but the sleek, opulent pictures by cameraman Paweł Edelman visually convey the stylization of the story, which is not exactly poor in emotions, drama and tension. "
Awards
The film was Poland's official nomination for Best Foreign Film for the 2000 Academy Awards , but it received no nomination. For this he was awarded six Polish Film Awards this year , in the categories of Best Actress (Grażyna Szapołowska), Best Cinematography , Best Film Music , Best Production Design ( Allan Starski ), Best Editing and Best Sound.
