Paweł Edelman (born June 26, 1958 in Łódź ) is a Polish cameraman .

Life

Edelman first studied film studies in his hometown and then moved to the Łódź Film School , where he trained as a cameraman. In 1988 he finished his studies. He made his feature film debut in 1991. After some successful work in Poland, he had his international breakthrough in 2002 with Polanski's film The Pianist , for which he received numerous awards. a. with the César , the European Film Prize , the British BAFTA Award and his first Oscar nomination. By 2019 he was on camera for six more Polanski films.

In 1991 and 1997 Edelman was awarded the prize for the best cameraman at the Polish Film Festival Gdynia for his work on Kroll and Pan Tadeusz, respectively. He won the Polish Film Prize for Pan Tadeusz , The Pianist and Andrzej Wajda's Oscar-nominated war drama The Katyn Massacre . The jury recognized him in 2013 as the winner of the Marburg Camera Prize 2014 as "a leading European image designer who translated the rugged history of the last century with impressive images" .
