Reviews

“Instead of spreading a costume biopic about the genius and madness of an artist in front of the usual historical backdrop, Majewski has chosen a radical, captivating approach that gives birth to a perfect art film. Right from the start, the camera reverently immersed itself in the rough natural idyll of Flanders in 1564, respectfully measuring through tableaus of peasant still lifes and misty landscapes, conjuring up a fabulous atmosphere and enjoying it in complete tranquility. Majewski selects a dozen from the 500 or so characters in the mammoth picture, whose daily work in courtyards, fields and markets he depicts in a detailed naturalism - unexplained and yet lyrical. It evokes an almost actionless picture gallery in muted colors, a lot of indirect natural light and dark tones. For a long time he lets images and sounds speak for themselves, until art collector Nicolas Jonghelinck (Michael York) talks about the oppression by the Spaniards, painter Bruegel (Rutger Hauer) about the genesis and approach of his picture and the Virgin Mary (Charlotte Rampling) about Jesus' death leave out monologically.
