SBB (originally an abbreviation of Silesian Blues Band , later Szukaj, Burz, Buduj ( Search, breaking, building or Search, Break & Build )) is a Polish rock and fusion band .

history

The band was founded in 1969 in Michałkowice . The initiator was keyboardist and bass guitarist Józef Skrzek , who also took over the vocals. He was joined by the guitarist Antymos Apostolis and the drummer Jerzy Piotrowski . At first they mainly played the blues . Between 1971 and 1973 the band worked with the then most innovative Polish rock musician, Czesław Niemen ; with him, Helmut Nadolski and z. T. also Andrzej Przybielski they played several albums under the band name Niemen . In 1974 they decided to record their own LP called SBB . It was created as a recording of two concerts in Warsaw and was characterized by the fact that genre boundaries played no role on it. The band performed at the National Festival of Polish Song in Opole in 1974 and at the Jazz Jamboree in 1974 and 1975 and was enthusiastically celebrated by the audience; perhaps also because they sounded so “western” like no other Polish group before. The first foreign appearances followed, including 1974 in Frankfurt am Main .

The next LPs were characterized by a few, but long pieces that were mostly sung in English. Extensive instrumental passages with extensive solos and elements of progressive rock shaped the music, individual pieces occasionally filled a whole LP page (as with the 1977 record) and were further developed in concert through free improvisation. The range of styles was supplemented on the AMIGA release from 1978 to include light-footed funk in a radio-compatible song format. The last record of the first SBB phase was created under the title Memento z banalnym tryptykiem in 1980, the provisional year of dissolution of SBB.

Later there were four attempts at revival, in 1991, 1993, 1998 and 2000. The sound of the old LPs has been reworked and expanded to include bonus tracks, and historical recordings are published from the archives (such as the concert in Karlstadt in 1975, in which the band spontaneously improvised for 44 minutes beyond all song structures).

Between 2000 and 2007, American drummer Paul Wertico from the Pat Metheny Group performed with Skrzek and Apostolis . SBB has been playing with the original line-up again since 2014. In 2015 SBB performed together with jazz violinist Michał Urbaniak . The group also releases new studio material.
