The Game of Power ( All the King's Men ) is an American - German drama directed by Steven Zaillian from 2006. The screenplay by Steven Zaillian is based on a novel by Robert Penn Warren , which was published in 1949 by Robert Rossen under the title Der Man who wanted to rule was made into a film.

Willie Stark grows up on a farm. He is a district treasurer , his wife is a teacher, and he begins to criticize the ruling, corrupt, political system and makes a career as a politician. He is supported by Jack Burden, who used to work as a journalist. His helpers include Tiny Duffy and Sadie Burke.
Stark is elected governor of Louisiana , Tiny Duffy is elected lieutenant governor, because "Well, someone has to be lieutenant governor". Stark tries to break the power of the oil companies and uses the same means as the system he criticizes. For private reasons he campaigns for the establishment of a health center and tries to get the children Adam and Anne of the dead Governor Stanton to his side. His political opponents are grouped around the judge Montague Irwin. To prevent impeachment proceedings, Judge Irwin is said to be put under pressure. In addition, his foster son Jack Burden is supposed to dig into his past. When he finds something, the judge commits suicide. The impeachment process fails, but when Stark wants to enjoy his victory, he is shot by Adam Stanton. It turns out that Tiny Duffy and Sadie Burke manipulated Stanton. Tiny Duffy is sworn in as his successor.
In addition to Stark's political career and his motifs, which are sometimes abbreviated, the motto “There is such a thing as the arrogance of the failed, like the scornful grin of a drunk” is presented in a variety of ways and resolved at the end of the film for each leading character.
Reviews
Kirk Honeycutt wrote in The Hollywood Reporter on September 21, 2006 that audiences could find the film " entertaining " as long as they didn't take it " too seriously ." He praised the “ charismatic ” representations.
Todd McCarthy wrote in Variety magazine that the film was " fatally miscast ". British actors would play three of the seven biggest roles. The plot is relocated to a later time than in the novel.
background
The story of Willie Stark is similar to the life of the populist politician Huey Long , who represented Louisiana as governor and senator in the 1920s and 1930s. However, the author Robert Penn Warren had always denied any connection to Long. The novel won the 1947 Pulitzer Prize and two years later was made into a film .
Filming took place in Louisiana in New Orleans , Donaldsonville, Morgan City and in the Louisiana State Capitol , Baton Rouge . Originally Meryl Streep was supposed to play the role of Sadie Burke . She left because of other commitments.
The film premiered on September 10, 2006 at the Toronto International Film Festival . The film was released on September 22, 2006 in the USA and on January 4, 2007 in Germany. In cinemas in the USA, the film only grossed approx. 9.0 million US dollars with a budget of approx. 55 million US dollars and, according to Forbes magazine, is therefore the biggest film flop of the years 2005 to 2009.
