Based on a true story (original title: D'après une histoire vraie) is a fiction film by the director Roman Polański from 2017, which is based on the novel of the same name by Delphine de Vigan . The main roles are played by Emmanuelle Seigner and Eva Green .
The film premiered in 2017 at the Cannes International Film Festival , where it was screened in the competition for the Palme d'Or. The German theatrical release took place on May 17, 2018.

The Parisian writer Delphine Dayrieux has suffered from writer's block ever since her novel became a bestseller. Her PR commitment and occasional threatening letters put her under further pressure, but when she meets the attractive ghostwriter Elle, that changes. She becomes friends with the strange woman and the two move in together. Elle is taking on more and more tasks for Delphine and answers - sometimes without consulting - her emails. The relationship slowly gets out of hand.

Filming began in November 2016. Filming locations other than Paris were Eure-et-Loir , Chapelle-Royale and Les Autels-Villevillon . Alexandre Desplat composed the music . For cinematographer Pawel Edelman it is the sixth film since 2002 that he has made together with Polański.

“Despite two strong leading actresses whose chemistry is right with each other, Roman Polanski's 'Based on a True Story' is not convincing. Neither narrative nor audiovisual, the old master can set new accents on a well-known topic, so that the end result lacks passion. "
