Tess is a French - British film drama by Roman Polański from 1979. It is a film adaptation of the novel Tess von den d'Urbervilles: A Pure Woman (Original title: Tess of the d'Urbervilles: A Pure Woman Faithfully Presented ) by Thomas Hardy from 1891. Nastassja Kinski played the main role .

action

The film is set in southern England in the 19th century, in the Victorian era . Impoverished Jack Durbeyfield sends his daughter to the wealthy d'Urbervilles when he hears that his family is related to them. She gets a job. After a night of dancing, she is raped by Alec d'Urberville and his lover. Tess is expecting a child and flees back to her family. The child is baptized by Tess himself shortly before his death because Tess' father refuses the priest access. Tess becomes a maid. She falls in love with the pastor's son Angel and tries to inform him of her past by letter before the wedding. But the letter does not reach him. When she tells Angel, newlyweds, her past, he rejects her and goes overseas. Tess becomes a day laborer and meets Alec again. When Angel returns from Brazil after a serious illness, he finds Tess and Alec living together in a boarding house. Humiliated by Alec, Tess eventually murders him and escapes with Angel. She is arrested in Stonehenge and executed in the capital of Wessex.

background

Polański made this film because his wife Sharon Tate gave him the original novel shortly before her death, stating that it would make a great film. At the beginning of the film, the dedication “to Sharon” appears. Polański chose Nastassja Kinski for the lead role .

The film was shot in France , mainly in Normandy (Cotentin, la Hague , Omonville-la-Rogue , Éculleville , Sainte-Croix-Hague , le Vast , Bricquebec and Saint-Jacques-de-Néhou ), then in Brittany ( Locronan , le Leslay ) and Nord-Pas-de-Calais ( Condette ).

The film's cameraman, Oscar winner Geoffrey Unsworth, died of a heart attack during the third month of filming. The film was completed by Ghislain Cloquet; both then received the Oscar for it.

Reviews

  • Lexicon of international film : Polanski varies his old theme of the defenselessness of innocence in a depraved world with strict adherence to the original and remarkable creative restraint. With all the sought-after aesthetics, symbolic encryption and exaggeration into the timeless, the film never loses the necessary signals to characterize the social conditions of the time. Even if the lofty concern occasionally fails, a serious, credible and sensitive work of particular aesthetic appeal.
  • Chicago Sun-Times: Roger Ebert praises the portrayal of Nastassja Kinski , who, due to her youth , freshness and naivety, is the right choice for the lead role. Ebert compares the plot of the film with that of a soap opera .
  • Prisma Online: "Tess" is the epically broad and romantic film adaptation of the novel "Tess of the d'Urbervilles" by Thomas Hardy, published in 1891. The director Roman Polanski tells in his own way the life story of the innocent peasant girl Tess, who is broken by the hypocrisy and exploitation of Victorian society. Through the connection of picturesque images and a broad, sad story, the film presents itself as a passionate journey of a tragic fate. This mood is supported by the successful portrayal of the main characters, especially the young Nastassja Kinski. Roman Polanski's approach to this material is very personal: “Tess of the d'Urbervilles” was one of the favorite novels of his wife Sharon Tate , who was brutally murdered in 1969 and to whom he dedicated his film.

Awards

The film won three Academy Awards in 1981 : for production design , cinematography and costume design ( Anthony Powell ). He was also nominated for an Oscar in three other categories, including directing and film music.
