Le Vast is a commune 324 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Manche in the region of Normandy .

Toponymy

Wasteland or arid land from the Latin vastum . Vast is the Norman form, while Gast (see Le Gast , Saint-Denis-le-Gast , Saint-Aubin-de-Terregatte and Saint-Laurent-de-Terregatte ) is the French form. The equivalent of vastum is in English waste in German desert . See Brillevast , Vasteville , Martinvast , Tollevast , Hardinvast and Sottevast on the Cotentin Peninsula .

geography

Le Vast is located on the Cotentin peninsula in the Val de Saire countryside . It is at the intersection of the Valognes - Barfleur and Cherbourg - Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue roads .

With the uneven terrain, the Saire River , the waterfalls, the forests and the houses, Le Vast is a picturesque village.

Geology and history

Le Vast is located in the Armorican massif . There you can find rocks from the Proterozoic , i.e. Briovérien . The clay turns out to be beneficial for the willows.

In 1803, Philippe Fontenilliat set up a cotton mill that employed 600 workers.
