Saint-Georges-de-la- Rivière is a French municipality with 278 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Manche in the region of Normandy .
geography
Saint-Georges-de-la-Rivière is located on the Cotentin peninsula , on the Côte des Havres between the natural harbor of Carteret and that of Portbail . Adjacent municipalities are:
- Saint-Jean-de-la-Rivière
- Barneville-Carteret
- Saint-Maurice-en-Cotentin
- Le Mesnil
- Port-Bail-sur-Mer with Portbail
On the other side of the Passage de la Déroute is Jersey , which can even be seen from the coast.
The community consists of sand dunes on the coast, pastures between the dunes and the village, and the village a little higher up. The long beach stretches from Portbail in the south to Barneville in the north.
Toponymy
As in the case of the neighboring municipality of Saint-Jean-de-la-Rivière , -la-Rivière means coast. It is derived from the Latin ripa . The parish was dedicated to George (saint) .
history
During the German occupation, the sand needed to build the local Atlantic Wall was loaded into the Saint-Georges-de-la-Rivière train station.
