Virandeville is a French municipality with 794 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Manche in the region of Normandy . It belongs to the canton of Cherbourg-Octeville-3 .

geography

Virandeville is located on the Cotentin peninsula on the D650 , twelve kilometers southwest of Cherbourg-Octeville , ten kilometers southwest of the canton capital Équeurdreville-Hainneville and seven kilometers northeast of the coast of the English Channel near Siouville-Hague . Neighboring municipalities of Virandeville are Saint-Christophe-du-Foc in the south, Teurthéville-Hague in the northeast and Helleville in the west. The hamlets of Hameau les Contes and Baudretot also belong to Virandeville . The Divette flows west of the town center through the municipality.

history

According to François de Beaurepaire, the place name is of Gallic origin and arose from the word eganda , a synonym for "water". The addition -villa was added in the 10th century. According to Ernest Nègre, Virandeville was first mentioned as Virandevilla between 996 and 1008. He assumes that Wirandus was a form of a Germanic name related to Guirandus . Or is the first element the Germanic name Wirandus .

The Sainte-Croix priory was founded in Virandeville in 1197, it belonged first to the Benedictine abbey in Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte and later to the abbey of Saint-Pierre-de-Cormeilles . During the French Revolution (1789–1799) the relics of Thomas Hélye (1180–1257), who was beatified in 1859, were kept in Virandeville.

Attractions

A 15th-century chapel that belonged to the Sainte-Croix priory is now used as a residential building.
