Erich Schmidtbochum , actually Erich Schmidt (born November 30, 1913 in Bochum , † June 7, 1999 in Braunschweig ) was a German sculptor .

Life

At the age of 16 he attended the evening course for sculptors at the Kunstgewerbeschule Dortmund , and at 17 he was admitted to the master class . In March 1934 he passed the state final examination with distinction.

He then moved the focus of his work to Bochum and, at the honorable suggestion of the city of Bochum, added the addition "Bochum" to his name in 1937, so he called himself Erich Schmidtbochum . His work was interrupted when he was called up for military service , and new sculptures were created shortly after he was released from captivity . He died in Braunschweig ; He is buried in Wolfenbüttel , where his honorary grave is located in the cemetery .

Erich Schmidtbochum was a member of the Freemasons Association , his lodge is located in Wolfenbüttel.

Schmidtbochum's works are characterized by their simplified cubic form, which, however, never abandons the anatomical in favor of complete abstraction. After his death in December 2000, the city of Wolfenbüttel took over sculptures from the works. The artistic estate went to Bochum and Wolfenbüttel.
