Saint Martin Church

Baubigny ( Beaubigny to 1998) is a commune of 145 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Manche in the region of Normandy . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Cherbourg and the Canton of Les Pieux . The inhabitants call themselves Balbignaciens .

Toponymy

Baubigny is derived from the Roman patronymic Balbinus , followed by the Latin property suffix -acus .

geography

Baubigny is located on the Cotentin peninsula around 25 kilometers southwest of Cherbourg-Octeville . Neighboring municipalities are: Surtainville in the north, Sénoville in the east and Les Moitiers-d'Allonne in the south.

In the west, the municipality extends to the coast of the English Channel . A dune massif stretches from Surtainville in the north to Cape Carteret in the south. An eleven kilometer long beach stretches from Cape Le Rozel to Cape Carteret in the south. In 1974 the dunes were designated as a protection zone.

The rocks originate geologically from the Devonian .
