After the Allies landed in Normandy on D-Day , June 6, 1944, the city was long fought over. For example, Matthew B. Ridgway , later a senior US general, took part in D-Day with the 82nd Airborne Division and then fought with his troops in and around Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte for 33 days.
