Montebourg was fiercely contested between the Americans and the Germans during World War II . The city is in the immediate vicinity of the invasion beach Utah Beach , where the invasion took place on June 6, 1944 . On June 22, 1944, the 4th Division under General Roosevelt was to occupy the small town in order to advance to Cherbourg. It was only when the German front collapsed in Barneville on the west coast of the Cotentin peninsula that Kampfgruppe Keil (919th Infantry Regiment) withdrew. A badly damaged city was left behind.
