The Plain is a natural area on the Cotentin peninsula south of the Val de Saire . The area is located in the French department of Manche in the Normandy region and is bordered to the west by the River Merderet (a tributary of the Douve ) and to the east by the Cotentin east coast. Valognes forms the northern border, while Carentan is the southern border. The most important cities are Montebourg and Sainte-Mère-Église . Several municipalities also have the area designation in their name, such as Angoville-au-Plain , Beuzeville-au-Plain and Neuville-au-Plain . Large parts of the area are located in the Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin Regional Nature Park .

Toponymy

In the 12th century, Wace made the distinction between “Li païsan et li vilain, Cil del boscage et cil del plain. »D. H. between the farmers in the bocage landscape and the farmers in the plain . Namely, Plain and the French word plaine ( dt. Level) related.

geology

The Cotentin belongs mainly to the Armorican massif , but the Plain is located in the Paris basin (although the Îles Saint-Marcouf in turn belong to the Armorican massif). Here you can find clayey limestones from the Sinemurian .

history

In the Plain is also the Utah Beach stretch of beach , which gained great importance during the invasion of Normandy in World War II .

Agriculture

Between Sainte-Mère-Église and the Bessin , milk products with a verified designation of origin ( Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée , AOC) Isigny-Sainte-Mère are very popular.

Horse breeding also plays a very important role in the Plain, especially since the 19th century. The landscape is recognized as the cradle of a special breed of trotters and riding horses . It is the Anglo-Norman breed , which is the result of crossing English stallions and mares from the Cotentin peninsula.
