Saint-Jean church

Saint-Jean-de-la- Rivière is a French commune of 350 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Manche in the region of Normandy . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Cherbourg and the Canton of Les Pieux . The inhabitants call themselves Saint-Jeannais .

Toponymy

Formerly called Turgisville . It is derived from the Scandinavian Thorgisl d. H. "Thor's hostage". For Rivière , see Saint-Georges-de-la-Rivière .

geography

Saint-Jean-de-la-Rivière is located on the Cotentin peninsula , on the Côte des Havres between the natural harbor of Carteret and that of Portbail . Adjacent municipalities are:

On the other side of the Passage de la Déroute is Jersey , which can even be seen from the coast.

A long beach stretches from Portbail in the south to Barneville in the north. Slate and limestone from the early Cambrian can be found on the deepest part of the beach, which only appears at low tide .
