Picauville is a French commune with 3,278 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Manche in the region of Normandy . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Cherbourg and the Canton of Carentan .
With effect from January 1, 2016, the former parishes of Picauville , Amfreville , Cretteville , Gourbesville , Houtteville and Vindefontaine were merged and transformed into a commune nouvelle under the same name. On January 1, 2017, the formerly independent municipality of Les Moitiers-en-Bauptois was added. All former municipalities have the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality .

Picauville is derived from the French ending -ville and from the name Picaud . Most likely the name Picaud is of Germanic origin (the Germanic name would be Picheldis )
