geography
Fontenay-sur-Mer is located about 33 kilometers southeast of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin on the east coast of the Cotentin peninsula in the Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin Regional Nature Park . The English Channel limits the community in the northeast with a 400 m long stretch of beach. Fontenay-sur-Mer is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Quinéville in the north, Saint-Marcouf in the southeast, Saint-Floxel in the west and Ozeville in the northwest. The northeast half of the municipality is criss- crossed by numerous drainage ditches around the Marais du Pas de Languedi bog . The slightly higher inland areas are characterized by meadows and fields, which are partially bordered by hedges. A golf course ( Golf de la Presqu'île du Cotentin ) occupies the narrow coastal strip . Fontenay-sur-Mer includes the villages of Sotosville, Dangueville and Le Bas de Fontenay as well as several individual farms.
Place name
The name of the village first appeared in the Latin Fontenetum in the 12th century . From this the spellings Fontanetum (1192), Fonteneio (around 1280), Fonteney le Bercheur (1552) and Fontenay le Berceur (1755) developed into Fontenai-sur-Mer in 1828. The name comes from the Latin word Fontana (source, Brunne) back. From the 16th to the 18th centuries, the alternative name Fontenay-le-Berceur was used to distinguish it from a community a little further south called Fontenay . It was not until 1890 that the spelling Fontenay-sur-Mer , which is still valid today, was established.
