geology

Cape of Carteret

The Cape of Carteret is made of shale and sandstone from the early Cambrian , although the rest of the village was built on limestone and shale from the Devonian .

Origin of name

Barneville is derived from the Scandinavian patronymic Barni , followed by the French ending -ville . Carteret most likely comes from the Scandinavian words reidh anchorage and kart stony place.

history

On the Cape of Carteret are the ruins of the old Saint-Germain church. The church is said to have formed the core of the original settlement, which was later moved further inland due to the encroachment of the dunes .

traffic

From the port of Carteret, several ferry services connect the Channel Islands with mainland France every day .

Barneville-Carteret is served by the Manéo No. 11 bus line operated by the Manche department ( Valognes - Portail bus line ). Indeed, Valognes is the nearest train station on the Paris-Caen-Cherbourg railway line . The Manéo bus route number 10 connects Barneville-Carteret with Cherbourg .

Carteret is also one of the two terminus of the tourist train, Train Touristique du Cotentin , a section of the former Carteret- Carentan railway line . The 9 km long section runs along the coastal landscape across from the islands in the English Channel to Portbail . This museum train is therefore also called the Train de la Côte des Isles .
