Les Pieux is a commune with 3223 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Manche department in the region of Normandy . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Cherbourg and the canton of Les Pieux , of which it is the capital. The inhabitants call themselves Pieusais .

geography

Small bay of Sciotot

The municipality is located on the Cotentin peninsula , around 20 kilometers southwest of Cherbourg-Octeville , in the natural landscape of La Hague , and borders the English Channel to the west . Neighboring communities are Tréauville in the north, Benoîtville in the northeast, Grosville in the east, Saint-Germain-le-Gaillard in the south, Le Rozel in the southwest and Flamanville in the northwest.

The Channel Islands of Guernsey , Sark and Alderney can be seen from Les Pieux .

The Flamanville granite is surrounded by a contact aureole. In Sciotot are cornéennes found.

Toponymy

The name is derived from the Latin podium , which means height.

The place Étangval in Les Pieux does not come from the French étang (German: pond), but from the Anglo-Saxon stan (cf. German: stone).

economy

In the past thirty years the population has increased significantly due to the presence of a nuclear power plant in the neighboring municipality of Flamanville (+ 185.7% between 1975 and 2006). In practice, Les Pieux has become a small town. Due to the financial blessing that can be traced back to the nuclear industry, the community has much better infrastructures (transport links, sports hall, social welfare, etc.) than other communities that are just as large.

Les Pieux is a community with many faces. It is at the same time a rural community with the typical Norman bocage landscape, but also a modern city equipped with sports halls and supermarkets. It is also a tourist town with the small bay of Sciotot, between the granite cape of Flamanville and Le Rozel .

A kaolin deposit was developed from the 18th to the beginning of the 20th century. It supplied the porcelain factories of Valognes , Isigny-sur-Mer and Bayeux with the mineral.
