Gatteville-le-Phare is a French municipality with 490 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Manche in the region of Normandy , by its distinctive lighthouse , the most de Pointe Barfleur , is known was built.

Toponymy

The name is derived from the Germanic name Gatto. Then follows the French ending -ville ( ville "city"). In 1947 le-Phare was added, French for lighthouse .
The pond on the coast is called Gattemare , which is made up of Gatteville and mare ( French for "pond") (cf. Herquemoulin in Herqueville ).

geography

Gatteville-le-Phare is located on the Cotentin peninsula , in the Val de Saire countryside . It is in the Armorican massif , where Barfleur granite is exposed. The neighboring communities are:

• Vicq-sur-Mer
• Tocqueville
• Sainte-Geneviève
• Montfarville
• Barfleur

The Pointe de Barfleur forms the north-western limit of the Baie de Seine .

The sea in front of Gatteville-le-Phare lies exactly diametrically on the globe to the Antipode Islands , even if their name (initially Penantipodes , ie “Near Antipodes”) originally meant London .
