Martinvast is a commune in the department of Manche in the region of Normandy .

Toponymy

Martinvast is derived from the Romanesque name Martinus . For the ending -vast , see Le Vast .

geography

The municipality is located on the Cotentin peninsula , near Cherbourg . Adjacent municipalities are:

It borders the Divette River and is traversed by the Ruisseau le Bisard stream. There is a fountain called Fontaine aux Bœufs ( dt. Cattle wells).

history

The story goes back to the 10th century when the huge Forêt de Brix (Forest of Brix) began to be cleared.

The criminal case of Louis-Jean Guéret (who had killed a baron) took place in the castle of Martinvast in 1906. On September 23, 1910, the trial came before the jury of the Department of Manche .

Attractions

The Roche à Trois Pieds (also called Dolmen de Martinvast ) is located near Martinvast

  • Notre-Dame de Martinvast church from the 12th century. It has been included in the list of historical monuments. A painting The child Jesus adored by Marie , a virgin with the child and bas-reliefs are listed as objects.
  • The Castle of Beaurepaire (16th and 19th century) and the park have been added to the list of historical monuments.

The 100 hectare park contains forests, pastures, ponds, a cascade , sculptures. It is partly on Hardinvast . Magnificent beds of small trees with flowers ( rhododendrons , camellias , hydrangeas ) thrive in the park, as do exotic conifers.

Martinvast Castle was rebuilt between 1579 and 1581 for Barthole du Moncel on the place where an old manor house was destroyed during the 100 Years War.

Marie-Louise d'Autriche was received twice in the castle (May 29, 1811 and August 27, 1813).

Count Alexandre du Moncel had the castle renovated between 1820 and 1861. In 1867 the castle was sold to Baron Arthur Schickler, the Prussian King's banker . He had the castle enlarged. During the Second World War, the castle was damaged by an English bombardment on January 16, 1944.

The Baronne Henri de Pourtalès, daughter of Arthur Schickler, inherited the castle.
