Saint-Martin-le-Gréard is a commune in the department of Manche in the region of Normandy . The inhabitants are also called Saint-Martinais .

geography

The municipality is located on the Cotentin peninsula . It consists of five larger hamlets (Le Bourg, Le Bauché, Les Calais, Les Roumy and L'Écluse), and eight smaller hamlets (Le Hameau Lecarpentier, Les Liais, L'Oraille, Le Palais, Les Martins, La Mare Vernier, La Haute Lande, and Les Patous).

Toponymy

About 1000 S. Martinus , about 1150 Sanctus Martinus le Girart , then 1280 Sancti Martini le Guérart , 1321 Saint Martin de Guérart , 1398 Saint Martin de Gréard , 1410 Saint Martin de Gréart , finally Saint Martin le Gréard . The parish is dedicated to Saint Martin de Tours . Gréard is a typical patronymic in the Cotentin.

history

Saint-Martin-le-Gréard depended on the Baronnie de Brix , and in 1 114 it was given to the Abbey of Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte by the Baron of Brix, Adam de Bueys.

Saint Martin Church

The first foundations go back to the 12th century.

The statue of Saint Martin can be seen next to the main altar . It comes from Bricquebec and was made between the 17th century and the Premier Empire . The tower was built in 1875 with stones from Couville.

There is a colorful limestone statue from the 19th century that was erected in honor of Saint Fiacre . On the right is an altar made of painted and gilded wood from the 16th and 17th centuries. The old church windows were destroyed during the Second World War, they were replaced. In the cemetery you can see a Calvaire (cross) from the 17th century and tombstones from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Other places

In the hamlet of L'Écluse , in a farm, there are remains of a building from the 16th century. The place depended on baronnie (domain of a baron) de la Lutumière in Brix , cradle of Scottish kings.
