Sortosville-en-Beaumont is a commune , in the department of Manche in the region of Normandy is. The inhabitants call themselves Sortosvillais .
geography
The municipality is located on the Cotentin peninsula , between Barneville-Carteret and Bricquebec . Their main town is called Hameau Costard . Neighboring municipalities are Le Vrétot in the north, Les Perques in the northeast, Le Valdécie in the east, Saint-Pierre-d'Arthéglise in the southeast, Saint-Maurice-en-Cotentin and La Haye-d'Ectot in the south, and Les Moitiers-d 'Allonne and Sénoville to the west.
Toponymy
Sortosville is derived from the Scandinavian patronymic Svarthofdi , followed by the French ending -ville . Beaumont is a nod to the former Beaumont sergeant . Svarthofdi would mean Schwarzkopf (cf. German Schwarz and German Haupt).
history
The "Knickebein" radio control system of the Air Force, which was set up during the Second World War , was located at Sortosville-en-Beaumont . Today you can visit this historic site, which played an important role in the course of the war. It was added to the supplementary list of historical monuments in 1990.
