Saint-Martin-de-Varreville is a French municipality with 181 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Manche in the region of Normandy . The village is on the Cotentin peninsula . The code name Utah Beach covered a stretch of coastline from Saint-Martin-de-Varreville during the Second World War . It became famous because three American paratroopers had to go to the Saint-Martin church of the same name to get bandages from the Germans who had set up a small hospital there. So the Americans were able to help three of their wounded comrades.
