The Phare de Gatteville is a lighthouse on the French Channel coast in the Manche department . It stands at Pointe de Barfleur , in the municipality of Gatteville-le-Phare , and forms the north-western border of the Baie de Seine .
history
The proposal to build a lighthouse near Barfleur came from the fortress builder Vauban , who wanted to reduce the risk of shipwrecks. One of the most famous shipwrecks in this area is that of the White Ship , which sank in 1120. The decision to build the first lighthouse was taken in 1775 by the Rouen Chamber of Commerce and the tower was then built under the direction of the engineer Duchesne .
In 1825, a nationwide “General Program for the Illumination of the Coasts of France” ( Program général d'éclairage des côtes de France ) was adopted, according to which two lighthouses should completely cover the area in between. Since this could not be implemented with the existing tower, construction of a new lighthouse began in 1829 at a distance of 60 meters. The new lighthouse was built in neoclassical style under the direction of the engineer Morice de la Rüe and commissioned in 1835. The old lighthouse was used as an optical telegraph (French: Sémaphore ).
The new lighthouse was electrified in 1896. In 2009, both buildings were declared Monuments historiques .
Tidal energy
Just like in the Raz Blanchard , the tidal power can be developed in the Raz de Barfleur .
