The Phare du Cap Lévi is a lighthouse on the French Channel coast in the Manche department .
history
As part of the nationwide “General Program for Lighting the Coasts of France” ( Program général d'éclairage des côtes de France ) launched in 1825, the still active Phare de Gatteville and Phare de la Hague were put into operation in the 1830s . In addition, the construction of a third order lighthouse began in 1850 between these two first-order lighthouses on Cap Lévi on a 30 m high cliff.
The first Phare du Cap Lévi was 31 meters high and opened in 1858. The first beacon used vegetable oil to alternate between a white continuous light and a red flashing light for 3 minutes each. The lens apparatus had a focal length of 25 cm. After 1875 they switched to the consumption of mineral oil ( naphtha ). In 1901, a beacon powered by vaporized petroleum was installed for red flashing light at 5-second intervals. In 1937 the tower was electrified.
After the first tower was destroyed in 1944, the current lighthouse was built between March 31, 1947 and June 14, 1948 according to plans by the architects Levasseur and Chauliat . At 28 m, this does not reach the height of the original tower, but since it is arranged higher on the slope, the height of the fire in relation to sea level remained practically unchanged. The tower was automated in 1975 and declared a monument historique in 2009 .
The lighthouse now has a halogen lamp with 650 watts of power and a lens system with a focal length of 25 cm. The range of the red flash is 20 nautical miles .
