The Phare de la Hague (also Phare de Goury ) is a lighthouse located around 1000 meters southwest of the Cap de la Hague on a rock in the French department of Manche .

history

In 1825 a nationwide “General program for lighting the coasts of France” ( Program général d'éclairage des côtes de France ) was launched. As part of this project, the lighthouse was built under the direction of the engineer Morice de la Rue on a rock called Gros du Raz off the canal coast and went into operation on November 1, 1838. The brick tower has a height of 52  m and stands on a round base. The lantern that houses the beacon has a diameter of 4 meters. The first beacon produced a permanent white light using vegetable oil and had lenses with a focal length of 92 centimeters.

On August 31, 1890, a beacon was switched over, emitting a flash of light every 10 seconds. The lamp of this beacon ran on mineral oil ( naphtha ) and had six wicks. The focal length of the lenses was still 92 centimeters, the rotating mechanism was implemented by means of rollers.

The tower was modernized again in 1905. The beacon was replaced with one of higher power and a metal staircase was installed. The new beacon used up vaporized kerosene and for the first time sent a flash of light every 5 seconds - this identifier has been retained ever since. In 1910 an acoustic signal was also installed.

After further modernization in the 1950s, the Phare de la Hague was electrified in 1971 and automated in 1989. The last crew of lighthouse keepers left the tower in May 1990; since then it has been operated without staff on site. In 2009 the tower was declared a monument historique .

The currently installed beacon uses a 250 watt incandescent lamp to generate a flash of light with a range of 19 nautical miles . The lenses of the rotating optics have a focal length of 30 centimeters.
