List of tallest lighthouses in the world
The list of the tallest lighthouses in the world includes "traditional lighthouses", that is, buildings that are primarily used as navigation aids . Some structures that also have navigation lights were not built as lighthouses. They are used by a beacon as a navigation aid and are marked with in this list .
Information on construction, position, year of construction, technical details and other comments are largely taken from the list "The Tallest Lighthouses". For further relevant information, please refer to the sources.
Altitude information comes from the US Coast Guard's lighthouse list (USCG) , the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) , the maritime manual of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency and the NGA - beacon directory and from the Amateur Radio Lighthouse Society (ARLHS) for the rest World unless better sources are available.
Ranking list
In the ranking, the problem arises that the building heights are specified differently in various publications:
- For nautical purposes, the height of fire ( lighting ) above mean water is decisive. This value is of no interest for a comparison of the building heights. A tower doesn't get any bigger when it's on the mountain.
- Here, information from the base to the signal light or to the top of the tower is preferred, i.e. based on architectural dimensions.
- Some data measure from sea level to the top of the tower. This usually results in the most spectacular values, which are hardly relevant here.
An objective assessment is therefore not always possible. The list only includes lighthouses over 60 meters (approximately 200 feet). Towers of the same height have the same rank number.
Ancient buildings such as the lighthouse of Alexandria (estimated 115 to 160 meters) or the Colossus of Rhodes (figure without a base probably 30-35 meters) are not listed.
