The Faro Recalada a Bahía Blanca is a lighthouse ( Faro in Spanish ) in Argentina . It denotes the landfall ( Spanish Recalada ) for the port of Bahía Blanca . The Puerto Belgrano naval base is also located at the entrance to the bay of the same name .
The individual parts for the 67 meter high, free-standing steel lattice tower were manufactured in France by the company that also built the Eiffel Tower . The tower was then built east of the Monte Hermoso seaside resort . It has an octagonal cross-section with a stepped tube in the middle and carries the lantern chamber with two galleries. It officially went into operation on January 1, 1906. The Faro Recalada a Bahía Blanca is the tallest lighthouse in South America and the entire southern hemisphere .
There are daily tours of the lighthouse and a small museum . There are 293 steps to the viewing platform.
