Puerto Belgrano

The Base Naval Puerto Belgrano ( German : Naval Base Belgrano) is the largest naval base of the Argentine Navy . The base is located near the city of Bahía Blanca , about 700 km south of Buenos Aires . The naval port is named after the Argentine general Manuel Belgrano (1770-1820)

Belgrano is the home port of the Argentine fleet. All large ships and the arsenal are concentrated at this base. The base of operations for the fleet is close to the main bases of the other two units, the Comandante Espora naval air base and the Baterias naval infantry base .

The naval base was founded on November 30, 1896 under the name Puerto Militar (military port). The name was changed to Puerto Belgrano in 1923. The growth and importance of the base were closely related to the development of the Argentine fleet. The battleships of World War II and the two Argentine aircraft carriers Independencia and 25 de Mayo were stationed here.

The shipyard located on the base carries out repairs and overhauls of ships and submarines .

After the rudder system of the icebreaker Endurance was damaged during a voyage in the Antarctic in February 2006 , the Endurance stopped at the military base in April 2006 to repair the rudder system. It was the first ship in the Royal Navy to call at an Argentine naval base after the end of the Falklands War in 1982.

In Puerto Belgrano a launch system for the Argentine carrier rocket Tronador 2 is being built, which is to complete its maiden flight from here in 2019 [obsolete] .
