The Campen lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in Germany and one of the tallest lighthouses in the world (14th place). It stands at the mouth of the Ems in the North Sea , northwest of Emden . The Campen lighthouse serves as a daytime marker and at night as a beacon for driving through Randzelgat in the Westerems before Borkum .

At 65.3 meters, the tallest German lighthouse stands out due to its unusual construction, because it is a free-standing steel lattice tower with a triangular cross-section and a stepped tube in the middle. The red three-legged tower with a white central tube carries the red lantern chamber with two galleries and a green roof. The lighthouse was built in 1889 and completed in 1890. It officially went into operation on October 1, 1891.

The beacon is one with a light intensity of 4.5 million candela of the strongest beacons in Germany. It has a range of approx. 55 kilometers. It is noteworthy that it is a precision sector fire with an opening angle of only 0.3 degrees. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, this place was not yet connected to an electrical grid. At first it was steam engines that generated the necessary electricity, later a diesel generator. This oldest still functional diesel engine in Germany is located in the tower's machine house . It was built by MAN in 1906 and has an output of 20 hp.

history

The lighthouse was planned as one of five beacons as part of the German-Dutch project lighting the Unter-Ems in 1883 and completed in 1890. On October 1, 1891, all five lighthouses could be put into service together. Each of the five beacons was responsible for a defined section on the shipping route between the North Sea and Emden . The Campen lighthouse has a pilot light and is a day mark. The other lighthouses within the transnational project were:

Tourism

The Campen lighthouse can be visited from the middle of March to the beginning of November, and on the Open Monument Day , the machine house, in which the diesel engine is usually demonstrated in operation. Those who climb the 320 steps to the lower gallery of the tower can enjoy a panoramic view of Borkum and over the Krummhörn to Emden on a clear day . An information pavilion next to the tower provides information about the "East Frisian Eiffel Tower".

Philatelic

On June 6, 2019, the first day of issue, Deutsche Post AG issued a postage stamp with a face value of 70 euro cents in the series Leuchttürme . The design comes from the graphic designers Susanne Wustmann and Dieter Ziegenfeuter .
