The Pilsumer lighthouse is a lighthouse on the North Sea dike not far from the town of Pilsum, which belongs to the municipality of Krummhörn . The tower is one of the most famous landmarks in East Friesland .

history

The lighthouse was planned as one of five beacons as part of the German-Dutch project lighting the Unter-Ems in 1883 and completed in 1890. On October 1, 1891, all five lighthouses could be put into service together. Each of the five beacons was responsible for a defined section on the shipping route between the North Sea and Emden . The Pilsum lighthouse was responsible for an approximately five kilometer long and approximately 600 meter wide section of the route between Borkum and Emden. The other lighthouses within the transnational project were:

The lighthouse served to light the Emshörnrinne until June 1915 . Then it was taken out of service because of the First World War so as not to give enemy ships any information about the fairway. The final shutdown took place in October 1919, as the fairway had changed due to sand deposits. After it was closed, the tower was used for different purposes and by changing owners. Its structural condition steadily deteriorated and in autumn 1972 even thought about demolition.

Instead of being demolished, the lighthouse was extensively renovated in the spring of 1973, as a result of which it was painted for the first time in the red, yellow and red paint that is known today.

The lighthouse has been owned by Deichacht Krummhörn since 1998 , which has taken care of the maintenance of the lighthouse ever since.

The tower became particularly popular through the film Otto - Der Ausserfriesische by comedian Otto Waalkes . In the film, the Otto lighthouse serves as an apartment. The lighthouse also appears in Otto - The Disaster Film; In this film Otto lives with a fisherman in a hut near the lighthouse. The tower also appears in the 2003 episode Sun and Storm of the TV series Tatort with Maria Furtwängler as Commissioner Charlotte Lindholm . The episode takes place in the fictional place Nordersiel (recognizable as the neighboring Greetsiel ).

The lighthouse is now also used as a wedding room for the Krummhörn community . Bridal couples and lovers had love locks on the window bars of the lighthouse . This had the Krummhörn dike removed in the course of the renovation and set up a new grid in the immediate vicinity of the tower, to which the locks have since been attached.

Technical specifications

The lighthouse was built by the mechanical engineering manufacturer Gutehoffnungshütte . The height of the structure is around twelve meters with an outer diameter of 4.4 meters. The shell made of forged sheet metal parts was riveted onto a steel structure. The upper end was a copper roof over the lamp room, which was equipped with several ventilation nozzles, as the lighting was still carried out by a kerosene wick lamp .
