construction
To make the Unter-Ems safely navigable at night, five lighthouses were built by 1891, three on the German and two on the Dutch side. In the Netherlands it was the Watum lighthouse and the almost identical lighthouse Delfzijl. The three-story structure was 10.5 meters high and provided space for a lighthouse keeper and an assistant.
Destruction in World War II
To prevent the German occupiers from using the lighthouse , Dutch troops burned the structure down in 1940. A new, 9.5 meter high lighthouse was erected at the same location in 1949, which was demolished in 1981 as part of a port expansion.
