A beacon ( seafaring ) is a single beacon that uses sectors (leading sectors, warning sectors) with different identifiers to identify a fairway , a port entrance or a free sea space between shallows.

Sectors with different colored lights (e.g. green - white - red) or different clocks (flashing rhythms) are used to mark the course. The middle sector is the leading sector and indicates the correct position. The two outer warning sectors indicate position deviations that require course corrections.

Until the early 20th century called leading light of existing mostly of upper and lower fire double beacon, now leading lights are called.
