The Rhinplate is an island in the Elbe at the height of the Schleswig-Holstein Glückstadt .
The main fairway of the Lower Elbe runs to the west of the Rhinplate, and to the east runs the Glückstädter Nebenelbe, which serves as the entrance to the Glückstadt harbor and the jetty for the Elbe ferry Glückstadt-Wischhafen . Parts of the approximately five-kilometer-long and 134-hectare island are flooded during floods , especially these parts are overgrown with reeds , the rest also with riparian forest . In the far north and south there is a beacon for navigation (Rhinplate North and Rhinplate South). The island is owned by the federal government .
The island and the Glückstadt side Elbe south of Glückstadt including the eastern bank area with a total area of 460 hectares were placed under the designation “ Rhinplate and Elbufer south of Glückstadt ” as a Natura 2000 area under a nature reserve .
The Rhinplate was originally a sand bank in front of Glückstadt, which was created in the 1950s by sand from the dredging of the Lower Elbe fairway.
