Johann von Goëss
Johann Freiherr von Goëss (also Johann von Goës and Johannes von Goes , originally Johann de Troch a Goëssen ; * February 10, 1612 in Brussels , † October 19, 1696 in Rome ) was as Johann VIII. Bishop of Gurk and cardinal .
Life
The family of Johann von Goëss came from the Netherlands. He was born as the son of the officer Peter de Troch and Franziska Goëssen in Brussels and studied in Leuven. He initially devoted himself to the military career and later became a diplomat. In 1638 he came to Rome and Naples , Emperor Ferdinand III. appointed him in 1639 as Reichshofrat and he was entrusted with important diplomatic missions. During the Danish-Swedish war he was the imperial envoy in Copenhagen . When the Turks were preparing for a new campaign in 1663, Emperor Leopold I entrusted him with the delicate task of negotiating a settlement with Ali Pasha , but the mission failed. On the return trip to Vienna, he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt. His salvation is said to have awakened in him the decision to enter the spiritual class later. In the following years he was sent to Berlin and Königsberg .
In 1675 he returned to Vienna and on October 30, 1675 Emperor Leopold I appointed him Bishop of Gurk. Since he had not received any orders, he was preparing for the priesthood and celebrated on 13 December 1675 at the Jesuits in Vienna his first Mass . In 1676 he was ordained bishop in Vienna. With his cathedral chapter, the bishop got into lengthy controversies over contentious questions of intellectual jurisdiction, which were settled in 1683 by a settlement. The bishop traveled to Rome several times on matters relating to the Viennese court. In the consistory of September 2, 1686 he was by Pope Innocent XI. elevated to cardinal and on November 14th d. J. installed as cardinal priest of the titular church of San Pietro in Montorio . He attended a conclave twice , in 1689 and 1691. In the second conclave he prevented the election of Gregorio Barbarigo, who was too French-minded for the Viennese court . Goëss also developed extensive building activity and expanded Strasbourg Castle into a baroque prince's seat. The cardinal spent the last years of his life in Rome, where he died and was buried. His heart was transferred to the St. Nikolaikirche in Strasbourg .
