Epitaph for Bishop Schönburg in Strasbourg

Johann von Schönburg came from the noble von Schönburg family . He was a doctor of both rights and belonged to the world priesthood, but in 1527 he became the top cellarer in Melk Abbey .

In 1537 he received the canonical at Passau Cathedral . In 1546 he was appointed pastor of Sievering near Vienna and three years later he attended the Provincial Synod of Salzburg as a representative of the Diocese of Passau . In 1549, at the request of King Ferdinand I, he was elected abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Melk as a diocesan priest , because the convent had merged into three monks who were out of the question as abbots as a result of the Reformation. He held this office from 1549 to 1552. At this time he was already showing his economic skills.

In 1552 he was appointed Bishop of Gurk by King Ferdinand I. The contract of 1535 between King Ferdinand and the Archbishop of Salzburg was decisive for the first time, which should regulate the future regulation regarding the filling of the vacant Gurk bishop's chair. This treaty remained in effect until 1918, until the fall of the Austrian monarchy.

On March 27, 1552, Schönburg in Passau was consecrated bishop by Wolfgang von Salm .

His reign fell at the time when Protestantism began to spread rapidly in Carinthia. However, the bishop died after a short reign. In the collegiate church of St. Nikolai in Strasbourg (in Carinthia) is his marble epitaph, which gives 1554 as the year of his death. However, it is not entirely certain whether he was actually transferred there and found his final resting place in his diocese, or whether he was buried in Passau. There is a tombstone in the cathedral cloister with the date of death January 9, 1555.
