Life

Polycarp von Kuenburg came from the Carinthian noble family of the same name , which through him had become a hereditary cupbearer of the archbishopric of Salzburg after the Count von Thun family died out in 1669 . His father was Johann Ferdinand and his mother Barbara Constantia Scheittin, Freiin von Hohenburg and Schmirenberg. On January 31, 1669, Count Polykarp became a member of the Salzburg cathedral chapter , later chief stableman at the archbishop's court and in 1666 Vice Cathedral of Friesach.

In March 1673, the Archbishop of Salzburg, Maximilian Gandolf , appointed him Bishop of Gurk, on February 24 of the following year he was confirmed and consecrated bishop on April 2, 1674. On August 11, 1674, it was ceremoniously installed in Gurk Cathedral .

One year later, on July 15, 1675, the bishop died in Salzburg; it is not known whether he had re-entered his diocese after the installation. He was buried in Salzburg at his own request, only the heart found its final rest in the Gurk Cathedral behind an epitaph made of brown marble on the inner north side.
