Girolamo Balbi (also Hieronymus Balbus , eigtl. Accellini ) (* around 1450 in Venice ; † 1535 there ) was an Italian humanist and bishop .

Life

Balbi was a native of Venice and took his mother's maiden name, his real name being Accellini. At a young age he was a student of Julius Pomponius Laetus in Rome . The future Pope Pius IV was his fellow student. From 1489 to 1492 he lectured on canon law , moral philosophy and astronomy at the University of Paris . Due to a conflict with some students and accusations of heresy and immorality (he was defended by Erasmus of Rotterdam ), he left Paris. After a stay in England, he came to Padua and was from there in 1494 by Maximilian I to the University of Vienna appointed, where he was at the Sodalitas Danubiana of Conrad Celtis involved.

When he wanted to return to Italy via Hungary in 1499, he was robbed and wounded in a forest by robbers, which meant he had to return to Vienna. This was followed by a longer teaching activity in Prague , which earned him a lot of admiration. The Hungarian King Ladislaus entrusted him with the education of Prince Ludwig and his sister Anna. As a reward, he was awarded the Provosty of St. Martin in Pressburg , after he had entered the clergy with the Bishop of Fünfkirchen shortly before . He was sent abroad several times for diplomatic matters, for example he took part in the wedding ceremony of the Polish King Sigismund in Cracow . In 1520 he appeared as the Hungarian envoy at the coronation of Emperor Charles V in Aachen. At the Diet of Worms he spoke out sharply against Luther .

On March 11, 1522 he was by Pope Hadrian VI. appointed Bishop of Gurk. On March 25, 1523 he was ordained bishop in Rome by Cardinal Lorenzo Pucci . On this occasion he stayed in the Pope's palace and socialized with many scholars. His before Hadrian VI. The speech given on the Turkish threat and general pacification was distributed in print in Rome. It was not until December 17, 1523 that he took possession of his cathedral in Gurk . In a first synod he warned against Lutheran teaching and called on the clergy to adhere to the old customs.

Because of his frequent absences, he was appointed a coadjutor in Antonius Salamanca-Hoyos . At his castle in Strasbourg he wrote his work De fortitudine , which went to press in Rome. In 1526 he resigned as bishop of Gurk for unknown reasons and moved back to Venice. In 1530 he took part in Charles V's coronation as emperor in Bologna . He died in poverty and was buried in the church of San Giovanni e Paolo in Venice.
