Toamasina (in French Tamatave ) is a city in Madagascar with 282,100 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2014) and the only natural port on the east coast.
Toamasina changed hands frequently. The Portuguese were followed by the French, the British, the Merina and finally the French again. In 1927 Toamasina was totally destroyed by a hurricane . The city then had to be completely rebuilt. In 1986 it was almost completely destroyed again by a cyclone .
population
More than half of the city's population is under 20 years old. The Betsimisaraka form the largest ethnic group . Her name means "the many indivisible". This ethnic group emerged at the beginning of the 18th century through a merger of several tribes who jointly defended themselves against invaders from the south (Confederation of Tsikoa). The Betsimisaraka are active as sedentary farmers, seafarers, fishermen and traders. In addition to other population groups, there are a large number of Indians in the city , who are among the wealthy citizens. Occasionally there are therefore pogroms against these .
Economy and Transport
The most important oil refinery in the country is located in Toamasina: Solitany Malgasy (SOLIMA).
Toamasina has developed into Madagascar's most important trading port since 1817 and is now managed by the SEPT (Société d'exploitation du port de Toamasina), which is subordinate to the Ministry of Transport. In the four harbor basins u. a. Handling bulk goods and containers ; the port handled almost 1 million tons of goods at the beginning of the 1990s. The nickel producer Amboatovy , whose open-cast mine is not far from the town of Moramanga , operates a processing plant for the nickel ore about 11 km south of Toamasina.
A single-track railway connects Toamasina with Antananarivo .
Forest station and zoo (Parc Zoologique d'Ivoloina) north of the city in Ivoloina, operated by the Madagascar Fauna Group (MFG).
Local transport
Dozens of rickshaw drivers are waiting for a shop in downtown Toamasina . The pousse-pousse , as the rickshaw is called here, is the usual means of transport for short distances and a way for the particularly poor to earn a living. The best way to get to the surrounding area is by taxi or bush taxi.
trips
From Toamasina you can take trips to the beaches in the area. Tours by rental bike to the Ivoloina zoo, which is around 12 kilometers away, are also popular. Shared taxis run regularly to Antananarivo . The island of Sainte Marie , which is well developed for tourism, is also nearby . The best way to get there is by plane. But you can also take the bush taxi to Soanierana-Ivongo to cross over there by boat. The latter is cheaper but more tedious and depends on the weather.
